(Gorilla trekking, Lake Kivu sailing, Nyungwe Forest, Lakes and Lodges)

Nyungwe Forest National Park lies in the southwestern corner of Rwanda. Nyungwe is an acclaimed chimpanzee trekking destination, but it’s also home to East Africa’s only Canopy Walkway. Take another perspective into the untouched rainforest canopy, walking upon the wildlife and centuries old treetops. And what a thrill it is!

Nyungwe Forest is a tourist favourite with those on safari in Rwanda.  When you arrive in Nyungwe forest, you come here on the winding roads through the huge tea fields. You can also find over 300 different bird species, many butterflies, orchids, 75 mammal species including the 13 primates, and there have also been the sightings of the golden monkeys.

Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda

Arrival and pickup from Kigali Airport. Visit the Genocide Memorial in Kigali. Here you will begin to understand what happened in 1994 when 1 million people died within 100 days. After the visit, drop-off to Hotel Mille Collines or Chez Lando Hotel (Economical option), Kigali. (Meals: Dinner)

Day 2

Kigali to Gisenyi, via Ruhengeri

10h00: After breakfast, pickup from Hotel and drive to Ruhengeri. Drive to Lac Kivu Serena or Paradise Malahid Resort (Economical) Hotel, Gisenyi, Rwanda. Relax on the white sand beach along Lake Kivu. Enjoy a spectacular performance by the intore traditional dancers of Rwanda in the hotel lawn. (Meals: breakfast)

Day 3

Gisenyi – Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda – Bukavu, DRC

07h30: After breakfast, pickup from Hotel and drive to Nyungwe Forest, in about 4.5 hours. The route passes through the beautiful tourist town of ‘Kibuye’ along the Lake Kivu. Drive to the entrance gate for ‘Canopy Walk’. Permit $60 each (cost included) After trekking, drive about 45 minutes to Rusizi-1 border Barrier. After Immigration formalities of Rwanda and Congo DRC, drive to Panorama Hotel or Horizon Hotel (Economical) Bukavu for lodging. After check-in, drive to Starco Restaurant for lunch. After lunch, drop back to your hotel over-looking the beautiful Lake Kivu. Dinner and night stay at the hotel. (Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 4

Kahuzi Biega lowland gorilla trekking and Lwiro

06:30 a.m. After early breakfast, pickup from your hotel/residence/Port and drive to Kahuzi Biega National Park precisely in the southern part at Tshivanga (pronounced Chivanga). Arrive at the National Park Headquarter where you will be briefed by the Park staff. Enter into the park accompanied by armed Park rangers and enjoy Eastern Lowland Gorilla trekking. A typical visit will start with a 1-2 hour trek, in search of the gorilla group. After the trekking, drive to Lwiro (optional) where there is the Scientific Research Center (Entrance fee $70 each, not included), which was built in 1947 by Belgians. Here chances are to visit the Chimps’ sanctuary, the museum, the library, the biodiversity room and snakes in cages. (Though not in very good shape) 14:00 Lunch at a restaurant in Lwiro / Packet. Then, retrieve back to hotel. Dinner & night stay at the hotel. (Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 5

Kahuzi Biega trekking, birds watching and chutes (waterfall) - Goma

07h30: After breakfast, pickup from your hotel / residence and drive again to Kahuzi Biega National Park for trekking, bird watching and the Mont Biega Waterfalls (as shown in the picture). After trekking, return to the nearby restaurant and have your lunch / picnic lunch. After lunch, drive to Panzi Hospital, a project of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr Denis Mukwege with a 450-bed hospital (if available). Dr Mukwege shares the 2018 peace price along with Nadia Murad, activist for ISIS/Daesh atrocities against women in Iraq. After the visit, retrieve back to your hotel. Things to remember while trekking: - Walks in the forest can be strenuous and the temperatures / weather can vary greatly - Wear a long sleeved shirt and / or rain jacket with trousers and solid shoes - Gum-boots are available with Park Rangers which may be used to visit the slippery Waterfalls. - Consider your fitness level - Leave no rubbish behind - Keep a safe distance from all wild animals - Do not use flash photography Permit for trekking and chutes (cost included) In the evening drive to Emmanuel Boat Port, Bukavu. Take a night big boat to Goma. Dinner on board. Night spent in the dormitory of the boat. Private room mostly available for $50 extra (cost not included). (Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 6

Goma – Bunyonyi, Uganda

06h00: Arrive at Emmanuel Port, Goma, Congo DRC about 100kms in the North. The boat will sail through the beautiful Lake Kivu where you will witness many small islands. After domestic Immigration, drive to a restaurant for breakfast. After breakfast, drive to visit ‘Volcano Observatory office’ and collect first hand info about world’s biggest lava lake and how it is monitored in different sections of the Observatory. Then, visit the ‘Goma Souvenir Market’. Different models of Tchikudu, gorillas and pirogue, as well as famous African jewelry and masks are found here. 13h00 – Lunch at Au Bon Pain / Paradise Club (Ethiopian + Eritrean buffet) / Ble D’or (Lebanese Restaurant). 14h00 – After lunch, drive to Grand Barriere post for exit from DRC. After Immigration formalities at Goma and then Rwanda ($30 visa on arrival paid by tourists) side, take another vehicle to drive to Bunyonyi Lake in Uganda (about 160 kms in 4.5 hours). After border formalities of Rwanda and Uganda, continue Eastwards about 50 kms to reach the Lake. ($50 Visa on arrival for Uganda paid by tourists). Check-in at ‘Lake Bunyonyi Overland Resort’. Bunyonyi Overland Resort is ecologically built, with local materials. It is locally owned and provides important employment opportunities for the people around the lake. Lake Bunyonyi has no bilharzias, no crocodiles, no hippos, and due to its altitude malaria is rather scarce - you could hardly find a friendlier body of water than this on Africa. The name Bunyonyi means "the place of little birds", and it definitely deserves such a name! Activity options: - Volleyball, badminton, indoor games, swimming, canoeing ($10 per day), boat-motor hire, bird watching, mountain biking, fishing, community walks, twice weekly local market Dinner and night stay at the Resort. (Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 7

Bunyonyi Lake – Queen Elizabeth National Park

08h30: After breakfast, drive to Mweya Peninsula and have lunch there. Afterwards take a Boat Cruise and later do an evening Game drive at Kasenyi where you can find large herds of Uganda cobs, topis, buffalos and elephants. Later, check-in at Marafiki Safari Lodge for the night. Dinner and night stay at the lodge. Queen Elizabeth Park entry fee: $40 each (not included) (Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 8

Queen Elizabeth Park - Jinja

08h00: After breakfast, drive Eastwards to southern source of Nile at Jinja. The drive is about 9 hours and the distance is about 480 kms. Check-in at Jinja Nile Resort, located on the Northern top of Lake Victoria. The Resort is about 80 kms from Kampala city. Jinja Nile Resort offers services for both the business travelers and holiday makers. Activities available from the resort include white water rafting and bungy jumping. The cottages and hotel services are spread over 30 acres of gardens allowing one to appreciate the beauty of the Uganda -the pearl of Africa. Jinja Nile resort was earlier voted best weekend getaway and best country hotel in Uganda by Travel News magazine. OR “Nile River Camp NRC” (Economical option)- is the latest development on the Nile overlooking Bujagali just 6kms from Jinja, with a spectacular view of the Nile, brilliant sunsets and beautiful surroundings. Day 9

Jinja – Kampala / Entebbe, Uganda

After breakfast, free time. Drop off to Entebbe Airport to take your flight back home. The distance is 130 kms and it takes around 4 hours, depending upon traffic. (Meals: only breakfast)
